The Internet Church
What is the internet church? To answer this question we need to understand the meaning of the local church (click here to read it). But the internet church is simply the church in the locality that we call Internet or Cyberspace. Most of the things we do in a physical location such as shopping, training, socialising can be done online. The internet church is therefore the expression of the body of Christ, the church universal on the Internet.
Is that possible? If yes how can one have church online? With the advances of technology it is actually very easy and very safe. For some people the internet church is about recording the Sunday meetings and making them available online for others to view. It is one way of doing it, but the internet church I am referring to here is more than that. I am talking about live meetings where believers can interact and have fellowship online. I know because we have been doing it for more than two years now.
So what can you do in an internet church meeting or service? Let’s look at what the Bible says about what should be done during local church meetings.
What should you do then, brothers and sisters? When you come together, each one has a song, has a lesson, has a revelation, has a tongue, has an interpretation. Let all these things be done for the strengthening of the church. 1Corinth14:26
Do you genuinely think that it is impossible to do these things in an internet church meeting? If your answer is “No, it is impossible”, then the only way to convince you is to invite you at one of our internet church meetings so you can find out for yourself.
It was a challenge to us when two years ago the Lord called us to leave the comfort of “normal” church meetings and start our internet church. But as we stepped out in faith and obedience, he gave us the technology to do so.
Our internet church system is equipped with:
- A whiteboard – where members can interact by drawing or writing
- A text chat system – where members fellowship via text
- An crystal clear audio chat system – where members with a simple microphone get involved in the meeting (clearer than telephone)
- A video chat system that enable members with a webcam to add an extra dimension to their internet church experience
- A PowerPoint presentation system – where we do various presentations ranging from praise and worship and teachings and bible studies
- A browser – where we share the online bible and various online resources
So as you can see, we have more than enough in our internet church system to enable each one:
- With a song to sing
- With a teaching to teach
- With a revelation to share
- With a tongue to speak
- With an interpretation to interpret
So that at the end of the meeting, each one is edified and strengthened. The best part of the internet church experience is that you can fellowship with your brothers and sisters around the globe from the very comfort of your own home! How good can it get? In fact sometimes it is hard to believe that there are thousands of miles between us, it is almost like we are fellowshipping in the same room.
We do more than that in our internet church: we counsel, we teach, we preach, we praise and worship, we minister prophetically live … everything you can think about.
Does the internet church replace the traditional local church? Of course not, they are all necessary. We have church both online and offline. Online, it is of course our internet church meetings and offline, it is our home church meetings. All is needed and all is an expression of the universal church, the body of Christ in a locality. With over a billion computers worldwide connected, the Internet is not just the fruit of the imagination, it is huge locality with a huge community that is active 24/7 and the church can’t afford to be absent. We are the salt and the light of the world and Jesus said,
“14 “You are the light of the world—like a city on a hilltop that cannot be hidden. 15 No one lights a lamp and then puts it under a basket. Instead, a lamp is placed on a stand, where it gives light to everyone in the house. 16 In the same way, let your good deeds shine out for all to see, so that everyone will praise your heavenly Father.”
For a long time the church has been hiding and shying away from the Internet. A church leader wrote to us one day said, “I need help to set-up a chat system for our youth. We know nothing about the Internet, except the bad things that happen on it.” And sadly, that’s the mentality of many christians.
It is about time, the church becomes also a community on the Internet – the internet church. It is time for the church to let her light shine on the internet. Only the presence of the church, the light of the world online can displace the darkness of pornography and many other sinful activities online.
The Lord has used us to build more than an internet church. Most of our ministry activities take place online. So if you are interested, you are either welcome to join our internet church and ministries or we can help you start or set-up your own internet church. The Lord has called us to equip the saints and build His church. We currently focus on the internet church ministry because not many are doing it.
I am sure you are reading this article because you had some questions about the internet church. I hope some of your questions have been answered here. But with everything in life, you can only have a better idea if you experience it. So we would like to invite you to join us one day to see for yourself what the internet church is all about. In the meantime, why not become part of our online community, the Internet Church.
